My son and I used to paint rocks, for years. We used to hide them in the neighborhood and they would be posted on the neighborhood Facebook page. We also painted rocks to put on my mother-in-law’s grave. I wanted to nourish the Jewish portion of my son’s heritage, which is bringing a rock to the grave of a deceased loved one. So fusing the art with the tradition of leaving the rock was something we shared together that was very important to us. Painting these rocks before PAA Awareness day kept me sane and focused with a purpose and also provided some positive nostalgia. My son never met his maternal grandmother, but he has had a way to express his love for her with our rock painting. Displaying my art in the neighborhood helps me feel that I am making a positive contribution to change.
